Last night, the Colorado Supreme Court announced that Trump is not eligible to appear on the state's 2024 ballot for president.1 He was disqualified from the ballot under the 14th Amendment of the Constitution, ratified after the Civil War, which states that no person who participates in an insurrection against the U.S. government may hold public office again. This is a huge win for our communities and democracy.
Colorado is the first state to disqualify Trump from the 2024 presidential ballot, and if more states follow suit, we can ensure Trump will never be able to hold office again! Together, we can keep up the momentum by calling on secretaries of state—the officials who oversee the administration of elections at the state level—to follow the law by keeping Trump off the ballot and out of the White House, and we can send a clear, constitutionally grounded message that insurrectionists have no place in our democracy.
Upon learning of this breaking news, MoveOn's executive director echoed the rallying cry we've been issuing for years: "Donald Trump is not above the law. Tonight's decision from the Colorado State Supreme Court proves that there are consequences to undermining our democracy and betraying our country."
There's no doubt that Donald Trump orchestrated the January 6 insurrection, inciting a deadly white supremacist mob to overturn the 2020 election results. But there's extraordinary pressure on secretaries of state to hold back from disqualifying him from the ballot—for fear that barring him will be viewed as partisan and unprecedented or will lead to further acts of violence. It's critical that secretaries of state know that their constituents understand the Constitution and want to see Trump held accountable for his actions.
That's why more than 443,000 MoveOn members have signed on to the petition calling on all secretaries of state to disqualify Donald Trump from the ballot.2 Let's keep up the momentum by urging more states to follow Colorado's lead and disqualify him from the 2024 presidential ticket. Just this year, Trump has been charged with 91 criminal counts, in four separate legal cases, and now has been disqualified from the ballot in Colorado.3 His crimes are finally catching up to him, but his legal team is doing everything they can to get him out of this. Just last week, the U.S. Supreme Court announced that they would hear a case on January 6 which could undermine the federal case against Trump and all insurrectionists, and it's highly likely that Trump will appeal the Colorado decision, bringing the case to the right-wing-packed Supreme Court to decide.4
MoveOn and its members have been on the front lines calling for Trump's disqualification for inciting an insurrection, and we will continue to hold Trump and MAGA extremists accountable for decimating our democracy and fundamental freedoms.
