It's been a little over a month since the devastating Cyclone Mocha made landfall in Myanmar and Bangladesh. With the support of our valued Leadership Circle, Save the Children’s emergency response teams were able to closely monitor and quickly respond to the situation as it developed. Today, on World Refugee Day, we’re sharing how our Leadership Circle’s support made a vital impact for one Rohingya refugee child and her family.
During the height of Cyclone Mocha, many health facilities closed in the world’s largest refugee camp: Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh. 20-year-old expectant mother Sajeda* was already worried about getting to an open hospital in time during the storm. To add to her concern, she had already lost her first child due to complications during birth. Then, as the storm struck the camp, Sajeda’s labor began.
Thankfully, donations from supporters like you helped us stock supplies and prepare for the devastating storm, allowing our Primary Health Center in Cox’s Bazar to remain open. Save the Children staff brought her to the health care center, where healthy baby girl Sahida* was born amidst the chaos of a cyclone.
Sahida was one of four healthy babies born at the center during Cyclone Mocha. Ambulance drivers from across camps worked in tandem with our dedicated maternity team to ensure mothers in labor and their babies were able to access critical care.
Unfortunately, all around the world, millions of children like Sahida are born in places without proper access to health care, education and safety — the key foundations that set children up for success. Together, we’re working to address these inequities around the world, support kids in crisis and give children like Sahida hope for a brighter future, no matter their circumstances.
