| Tell Congress: "The Electoral College is an antiquated, anti-democratic institution that perverts the will of the people. Pass the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact and end the Electoral College's reign of terror!" | Friend, If not for the Electoral College, there would be no question who won the election. Joe Biden is on pace to win millions more votes than Donald Trump―by an even larger margin that Hillary Clinton did. Joe Biden has already received the vote for President from more Americans than anyone in history―and that margin is only growing. The Electoral College is a complicated, voter-suppressive system that disenfranchises voters in most states. One person, one vote is a simple principle on which every other election in this country is based. States are the original gerrymander, ensuring a permanent overrepresentation of white, rural voters at the expense of everyone else. Democrats have now won the popular vote in all but one presidential election since 1988. SIGN NOW: The Electoral College distorts the will of the people, and should be abolished. Here's the good news: We can neuter the electoral college without changing the constitution, simply by letting states enact the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact, which ties that state's electoral votes to the popular vote―but only takes effect once states embodying 270 electoral votes (enough to elect a president by themselves) have ratified the compact. In this election, Colorado became the latest state to approve the National Popular Vote compact, bringing the number of electoral votes to 196! We have to keep pushing on this, to restore legitimacy to our democracy. The very real chance that Donald Trump could have held office for two full terms over the objections of a majority of voters isn't a sign of a healthy democracy. SIGN NOW: Tell every state to enact the National Popular Vote interstate Compact and end the Electoral College! Thanks, Mike Phelan Progress America |
