"My most fervent wish is that I will not be replaced until a new president is installed." This was the dying wish of the late Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Last month, we lost a true American hero. Justice Ginsburg served on the Supreme Court for 27 years, fighting her entire career to safeguard and protect our rights vigorously by upholding the Constitution, the same document we veterans swore to protect when we served in the military. In her time on the court, Justice Ginsburg led decisions to require previously all-male military academies to accept women, paving the way for gender equality in the military. Her fight to end LGBTQ+ discrimination is part of her powerful legacy she leaves behind, even as Trump's Trans Ban still lingers. She's tirelessly defended our reproductive rights. Justice Ginsburg proved time and time again she would stand up for our community. Now, we must protect Justice Ginsburg's legacy as we enter into the political fight for our lives. Mitch McConnell and other Senate Republicans couldn't even wait a few hours before gleefully announcing that they would vote on a new Supreme Court nominee from Donald Trump's shortlist before voters get to have our say in the election. The person chosen to take her seat in the highest court in the land should be someone as committed to justice for all as Justice Ginsburg was. That's why we are taking a stand now to show that veterans, their families and allies refuse to let the Senate confirm a Trumpian nominee to Justice Ginsburg's seat. Sign on to our petition demanding the Senate hold off on confirming a justice until after the people choose the next President. Veterans from Common Defense will deliver this petition locally to key swing Senators, so we need as many signatures as possible to strengthen our impact. Common Defense has been working for months in swing states to vote out Senate Republicans like Susan Collins, Thom Tillis and Martha McSally — and now the urgency behind this organizing just skyrocketed. If we don't win back the Senate this November, Trump, Mitch McConnell, and his Republican Cronies will be the ones to decide who the next Supreme Court justice is. This won't be easy, but we must continue to fight — we must continue to be engaged members of our communities fighting for justice and liberty for all. That starts with standing up to Republicans hellbent on replacing Justice Ginsburg with someone ready to undo all of the progress we've made together. Will you stand with us as we demand the Senate hold off on confirming a justice until after the people choose the next President? We lost Justice Ginsburg, but today, tomorrow and every day after that we will continue to fight for betterment and progress of our nation she believed in. In solidarity, Team Common Defense |
