| Tell the Senate: "Join the House of Representatives and pass the DC statehood bill to end the disenfranchisement of hundreds of thousands of Americans.." | Friend, On September 26th, the President threw a COVID party in Washington DC, helping to expose the entire executive branch of the US government to a deadly virus. Then those people went out into the DC community―spreading the virus further to unsuspecting people. As a result, cases are rising in Washington DC. The gathering at the White House went directly against DC regulations about gatherings and mandatory quarantines, but Republicans have a history of treating Washington DC residents as second-class citizens. SIGN NOW: We need to make Washington DC a state. Washington DC is home to more people than Wyoming or Vermont, yet because the majority of those residents are Black and brown, the District of Columbia has been denied full representation in Congress. But earlier this year, the House of Representatives passed a bill to enfranchise nearly one million voters and make DC a state. But the bill hasn't even made it to the floor of the Senate. Can you tell your Senator to stop this egregious voter suppression and make DC a state? Sign the petition: Tell Congress to make DC a state! There's no excuse for the mass disenfranchisement of people who live in Washington DC If DC were a state, it would have a larger population than either Wyoming or Vermont, both states where over 90 percent of the population is white. And despite lacking representation, DC. residents pay the highest per capita federal income taxes in the country, and more in total income taxes than 22 other states. But Senate Republicans have been insistent on blocking statehood for DC, worried about their political fortunes instead of voting rights. Republican Senator Steve Daines from Montana even went so far as to say that people in DC aren't "real people." Daines told the Senate to "go out to where the real people are at across the country and ask them where they think," rather than ask DC residents themselves. This rhetoric, depicting DC residents as less "real" than other Americans, is implicitly racist, and only more evidence that DC needs a voice in Congress. Will you tell your Senator that you won't stand by as nearly one million of your fellow Americans are denied representation, simply because of where they live? Tell your Senator: DC deserves statehood! Thanks, Team Progress |
