Friend, where were you on election night in 2016? It's become an American tradition to stay up and wait for the results on cable news. But since 70% of Americans will vote by mail this year, these ballots take longer to validate and count, so tens of millions of votes won't be counted until after Nov. 3rd. If media companies declare a winner on election night anyway, they'd effectively throw these votes out. We need to remind news companies their reputation rests on reporting accurate results, not reporting first. Add your name right now to our petition urging CNN, Fox, and MSNBC to not declare a winner until the votes are accurately counted — even if that takes days. If news outlets announce a winner too early, they send a signal to the public that the election results are final – even though millions of votes may not have been counted yet, including those of our service members stationed overseas. What's worse: Politicians could jump on the media's rush to call a winner before the votes are counted in an attempt to prematurely declare victory. CNN, Fox, and MSNBC set the tone for election night coverage, competing for TV ratings – including by being the first to declare the victor in each state. But this is about democracy, not ratings. And if we get the Big Three networks to pledge to not call the election until the votes are counted, other cable news channels will fall in line. With just days until the election, it's more important than ever that we remind news companies now: Your reputation rests on reporting accurate results, not reporting first. Add your name now to demand CNN, MSNBC, and Fox pledge not to call the 2020 election until the votes are counted. We're in the final stretch, but we have to be ready to protect our right to have our votes counted – even after November 3rd. Are you ready to wait for #ElectionWeek with me?
