| Tell Congress: "Trump's attempts to dismantle the post office are an attack on racial justice and a continued attempt to disenfranchise Black voters, at a time when vote by mail is likely the only safe way to engage with the 2020 election." | The destruction of the USPS is a massive voter suppression scheme. In the middle of a public health pandemic, which is impacting Black and Brown people most of all, Trump is abusing the chaos in his disastrous response created to tear down America's postal service. Trump's handpicked Postmaster General took over in May, and by July postal workers sounded the alarm about mail delays, unfinished routes, and the degradation of a service that every American relies on. Many have speculated that Trump is planning to destroy the Postal Service in an effort to suppress votes--and without our voices, he may succeed! SIGN NOW: Stop Trump's USPS vote suppression scheme! In a country with a history of disenfranchising and outright terrorizing Black voters, an attack on vote by mail is an attack on the voting rights of Black Americans. We need to stop it. Congress has two choices to save the USPS from Trump: Repeal the 2006 law that required it to pre-fund pensions for future postal workers who haven't been born yet, or provide additional funding to take away Trump's excuse to cut services. While competitors like UPS and FedEx have been eligible for bailouts, the USPS has been left out to dry by our government, despite being fully self-funded by its postal service fees. Tell Congress: Repeal the law that's bankrupting USPS, and ensure Black voters can safely vote by mail this November! Trump's attempts to defund the Postal Service are an attack--not just on the institution, but on Black America's ability to vote in an already incredibly insecure time. How? Most states have regulations around postmarking to validate ballots. For example, ballots postmarked up until election day must be counted. But with these new postal regulations, a large number of last-day ballots could reach the post office on time, but be disqualified because the post office failed to mark them properly. Tell Congress: Repeal the law that's bankrupting USPS, and ensure we can safely vote by mail this November! Thanks, Liz Havstad Hip Hop Caucus |
