Pamela, when we sent around our issues survey a few weeks ago, I wasn't surprised at all to see that one of the things respondents identified as a top priority was gun violence. Millennials and Gen-Z are the first generations to have grown up with the constant threat of school shootings — and we've had to sit by and watch as our leaders do next to nothing to stop it. Meanwhile, more and more people are killed by guns every single day. This issue is personal to me, Pamela. When a gunman armed with an AR-15 entered my high school in 2018, I lost 17 classmates, and others who survived were brutally injured. After that day I knew it was time to stop waiting for our leaders to take action — it was time for young people to take action ourselves. That's the idea behind Leaders We Deserve. If we can elect more young people to state legislatures and Congress who have actually grown up doing school shooter drills, we're more likely to be able to pass stronger gun laws that can hopefully stop more shootings in the future. And that's why I'm so excited we just elected our first Leaders We Deserve-endorsed candidate, Nadarius Clark in Virginia. Plus, we're supporting even more great candidates in 2024 and beyond. If we can make sure young people are represented in government at a level that actually reflects our population, we can finally start to make progress on this issue and so many others. But it's going to take a lot of work to get from here to there. So if you're with us in this fight, will you add your name to our petition calling on legislators to take action on gun violence today? Thanks for reading, Pamela. Together, we can change the face of our government for the better. David Hogg Co-Founder, Leaders We Deserve |
