Tell Congress: "Deal justice to Black, Brown, and immigrant communities by passing the Marijuana Opportunity Reinvestment and Expungement Act!." | Friend, For too long, Congress has taken the back seat to the courts in fighting for what's right as public opinion moved. Instead of affirmatively ratifying legislation to repeal the Defense of Marriage Act and ensure that same-sex marriage was a right, Congress, left it to the courts. With the packing of courts at all levels with Republican party operatives by Donald Trump and Mitch McConnell, we need Congress to step up and do their jobs. States around the country have taken action to decriminalize marijuana, but they're hamstrung by federal statutes that continue to treat it as a schedule 1 narcotic no different than heroin. It's time for federal lawmakers to pass the Marijuana Opportunity Reinvestment and Expungement (MORE) Act and end the war on drugs! SIGN NOW: Tell Congress to take responsible action to decriminalize marijuana and invest in communities! While marijuana consumption is similar across racial groups, studies show that Black and Brown communities are much more likely to be arrested and incarcerated for marijuana possession. For immigrant community members, marijuana-related charges require mandatory detention and often lead to deportation and create barriers to U.S. naturalization. Between 2007 and 2013 alone, over 34,000 people were deported whose most serious offense was possession of marijuana. In 2013, the number one drug crime for which immigrants were deported was simple possession of marijuana. SIGN NOW: Tell Congress to pass the MORE Act! Trump and McConnell's judges will have less latitude to legislate from the bench if Congress passes actual legislation. The MORE Act is a good place to start. Thanks, Mike Phelan Progress America |
