The Supreme Court just announced its slate of disastrous rulings to gut affirmative action, strike down student debt relief, and limit protections for LGBTQ+ people.¹ These devastating rollbacks to our fundamental rights, just a year after the Supreme Court shredded the protections of Roe v. Wade, confirm that the Supreme Court has squandered its legitimacy and the public's trust in it as an institution. 

America has yet to live up to its promises of equality and justice. Still, throughout history, everyday people have worked tirelessly to build a better and brighter future. Together, we've won hard-fought struggles toward a more just society. As we head into Independence Day, we cannot allow the highest court in our country to continue to erode the progress we have made.

 

Tell President Biden that we won't allow our rights to be rolled back by a corrupt court. Sign the petition NOW to demand that he add new justices to the bench, expand the court, and begin rebuilding the public's trust in our judicial system.

The Supreme Court has been hijacked by right-wing power grabs and stolen seats—and its Trump-appointed justices have stripped away affirmative action and abortion rights, while also undermining voting rights, civil rights, and more. The rampant corruption and decisions that dismiss all precedent are just the latest proof: Democrats must rein in the court, investigate it, and fix and rebalance it by expanding it.

President Joe Biden said it himself: "This is not a normal court."² The conservative justices have overturned precedent and legislated from the bench. And they've pursued these conservative crusades while Justice Clarence Thomas has embodied arrogant and disdainful corruption. He refused to recuse himself from cases involving the January 6 insurrection and Trump's attempts to overturn the 2020 elections, despite Thomas's wife's direct role in those efforts. And he has accepted gifts worth many hundreds of thousands of dollars from a right-wing megadonor, Harlan Crow, who funds conservative causes that come before the court and has refused to answer questions before Congress.^3,4  Meanwhile, Justice Samuel Alito has enjoyed luxury vacations paid for by a right-wing megadonor who has brought cases before the court—despite never revealing these gifts, nor recusing himself from the cases.⁵ This court in its current iteration is corrupted.  

 
If you believe this court has been corrupted and compromised, then join us in demanding Congress use its constitutional power to rein in the court—with investigations, a code of ethics, and, ultimately, an expansion to rebalance and fix the Supreme Court.

 

Chief Justice John Roberts has neglected to impose a code of ethics on the court. And thus he empowers the conservative majority—which is the result of court-packing by Mitch McConnell and Donald Trump, after McConnell refused to consider President Obama's nominee, bulldozed Brett Kavanaugh onto the bench without a thorough investigation into charges of sexual assault, and then rushed through the confirmation of Amy Coney Barrett, one month after the death of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg and only days before the 2020 election.

It's no wonder public faith in the court is at an all-time low—and yet, this conservative court continues to legislate from the bench and undermine the decisions of lawmakers who were democratically elected by a majority of voters.⁶

We can't allow the court to reverse decades of progress we the people have gained through organizing, protests, and direct action. President Biden must appoint new justices and expand the court in order to rebalance it against the stolen seats and unprecedented right-wing power grabs—and in doing so, help fight for abortion rights, voting rights, workers' rights, regulation of corporate power, and so much more.
