Hi Pamela, I'm Mark and I'm the Georgia State Director at Climate Power.
What a night. We saw big wins in Virginia, New Jersey, New York, and more. But I want to take a moment to talk about a state that's been on my mind every day this year: Georgia.
A lot of people are talking about the Georgia Public Service Commission elections, a critical battle in the fight to lower costs and combat climate change. Pundits are calling Alicia Johnson and Peter Hubbard's victories in the Peach State "the most impressive wins of the night."
With your help, Climate Power has been on the ground every step of the way, and I want to dive a little deeper with you to show just how special this win is.
Here's 5 takeaways from Georgia:
-
In a state Donald Trump won by 2.2 points in 2024, Democrats won by 26 points. That's not a typo. I didn't misplace a decimal point. Alicia and Peter each won by about 400,000 votes, in an election that typically passes without notice.
-
This is in spite of the Democratic candidates being out-fundraised 12 to 1 by the PSC incumbents and their corporate allies.
-
Since Georgia began electing Public Service Commissioners in 1906, Democrats have never unseated an incumbent Republican commissioner. Last night, they did it twice.
-
Georgia Democrats have been completely shut out of representation on the PSC since 2007. Last night, Alicia and Peter ended 18 years of one-party rule.
-
Across the four statewide elections last night, including Georgia, 99.8% of counties moved toward Democrats. I've worked on a lot of elections, and I've never seen anything like this.
This victory was fueled by voter anger and sticker shock over utility costs. In Georgia, many folks saw their bills increase by $518 a year over the last two years. In that time the Commission, including the incumbents who lost last night, voted to hike rates six separate times.
This is a historic victory. A major win in the fight to lower costs and combat climate change. But it's also just the beginning.
The work this team did this year in Georgia, and the work we'll do moving forward, is fueled by your support. If we want to continue to educate the public and secure more victories like the one we saw in Georgia last night, we need your help to continue to fund these on-the-ground efforts.
Don't let anyone tell you this is a fluke, or that your voice doesn't matter. There's a reason Donald Trump is quaking in his gold-encrusted boots. Last night showed what we can do when we stand together.
See you out there.
