Dear MoveOn member,
I'm Congressman Jamaal Bowman, and I'm writing to you today to tell you about a critical election that's coming right up on March 1.
Jessica Cisneros is running to represent the people of South Texas in Congress, and I can tell you from personal experience that the pathway to power for people like Jessica is blocked every step of the way.
Jessica ran for this seat and lost by fewer than 3,000 votes two years ago. But she kept on fighting and is running again, and if she wins, she'll get us one step closer to a better, more just America. But, Andra, she needs your help.
Jessica is a human rights attorney, and if she's elected, she'll be a leader in the fight for Medicare for All, getting corporate money out of politics, and fixing our broken immigration system.1
Jessica is running against Representative Henry Cuellar, a nine-term Democratic congressman in a deeply blue district, who voted with Donald Trump about 70% of the time.2 He's known as "Big Oil's favorite Democrat," boasts about his "A rating" from the National Rifle Association, is the only Democrat in Congress who opposes abortion, and has referred to undocumented immigrants as "rapists and murderers."3
Progressive leaders like Jessica Cisneros will have the power to make transformative change. We—and most importantly the people in her district—need her in Congress.
Jessica is deeply connected to the problems and struggles facing our communities. She was born and raised in the border town of Laredo, Texas. Her parents are Mexican immigrants. As a kid, Jessica saw families like hers torn apart by a broken immigration system. She saw her parents struggle to keep a small business afloat, while politicians in Washington protected large corporations.
While Jessica is fighting for a better future for all of us, her opponent wants to maintain the status quo. He received more PAC donations from the oil and gas industry this election cycle than any other member of Congress but one.4
Rep. Cuellar supports Texas's unconstitutional ban on nearly all abortions.5
And just last month, the FBI raided his home and office.6
We need better Democrats like Jessica in Congress, not Henry Cuellar.
That's why I endorsed her, as have Bernie Sanders, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and MoveOn members in her district. She's an absolute inspiration.
Thanks for all you do.
–Jamaal Bowman, New York's 16th District
