Pamela, The Trump administration has been ignoring due process and basic fairness in our immigration system. And people in the U.S. immigration system who are facing detention and deportation do not have the right to a free public defender. As we strive to achieve a universal right to representation, cities, counties, and states must lead the way. After the first Trump election, Vera launched the SAFE Network to help do just that. We're working in partnership with local government champions, legal service providers, and advocates in jurisdictions across the country to defend the rights of their residents and promote due process. |
Pamela, the SAFE Network is a lifeline. People in immigration detention are up to 10 times more likely to establish their right to remain in the United States when they have legal representation. And there is good news: our reach is expanding. As of 2024, there are 14 states investing in deportation defense—and many more are increasing resources for this lifesaving work. As this administration continues to escalate its anti-immigrant agenda, it is critically important that local and state governments ensure their community members are not taken from their homes and loved ones without regard for their legal rights. Pamela, next Tuesday is National Immigrants Day. Take a moment to recognize and celebrate this day by learning more about the vital work your activism makes possible through the SAFE Network. In solidarity, Vera Institute of Justice |
