Pamela ― as Americans, we're not guaranteed much.
But one thing we're guaranteed is Medicare. It's a public good, an ongoing promise we make to each other that after a lifetime of hard work, you know you'll be taken care of. But now, private corporations have weaseled their way into Medicare in order to extract even more profits. And as a result, the dystopian, for-profit healthcare system is coming for our seniors―with deadly results.
Several private, for-profit Medicare Advantage providers, including UnitedHealthcare, Humana, and CVS, have all started using AI in their authorization processes. That means AI is the one deciding if someone is eligible for a lifesaving medication. And starting in January 2026, Congress has given traditional Medicare the go-ahead to implement this pilot program to run for six years in six states.
Our government is willing to use this risky, untested system on our vulnerable seniors. And we know that when, not if, the program makes a mistake, it's up to the senior and their family to wait on hold to get an explanation from a real person.
A recent survey amongst physicians and specialists found major concerns around using AI; 61% of respondents reported insurers are using AI to increase denials and harm to patients. We know it'll only get worse when this pilot is rolled out to other states and insurance companies.
And to add insult to injury, a Senate study found that patients with insurers utilizing AI will see their premiums rise almost $22 a month in the next year. AI is going to cost our seniors more, not just in time, but also financially.
Our seniors deserve better. They shouldn't have to worry if a machine made a major medical decision against their doctor's orders. Tell Congress to prohibit Medicare Advantage and traditional Medicare from using AI to replace human doctors.
Thank you,
Mike Phelan
