Will you sign the petition to demand Congress BLOCK attacks against the Affordable Care Act?
Dear MoveOn member,
Republican attempts to repeal the Affordable Care Act (ACA) over the past decade have been thwarted every step of the way by grassroots activists. But now, Republicans in Congress are sneaking parts of their ACA repeal wishlist into President Donald Trump's unpopular budget package that threatens the health care of millions of Americans while giving tax breaks to the ultra wealthy.
Millions of people could have their health care ripped away because of the ACA changes proposed by Republicans in Congress. By ending automatic reenrollment in plans, letting health care premium tax credits expire, and cutting subsidies for certain immigrants—Republicans are stripping critical health care access from everyday Americans.1 Meanwhile, the budget would pave the way for major tax cuts to the wealthiest Americans and what groups are calling the "largest transfer of wealth from the poor to the rich in a single law in U.S. history."2,3
Add your name to the petition to demand your members of Congress block any attempts to repeal ACA provisions.
Health care leaders are sounding the alarm. In a letter to the House, organizations—including the American Diabetes Association, American Lung Association, and American Cancer Society—warned that ACA cuts would be devastating for the public health care marketplace—and the people who rely on it. "If enacted," the authors of the letter noted, "millions of people will lose health insurance, premiums will skyrocket, and hospitals and health care providers will be forced to close their doors—particularly in rural communities."4
This is yet another example of Republicans playing politics with our health. We have to fight back. Sign the petition to make it clear that we are ready to defend the ACA against these attacks! Nearly two-thirds of Americans have a favorable opinion of the ACA.5 Over the years, people have contacted their legislators, protested in the street, and publicly shared their stories about how the ACA has benefited them and their families.
People like Rebecca, a breast cancer survivor who got health insurance through the marketplace after her husband lost his job, making open-heart surgery affordable.6
Or Heather, who was able to access health insurance through the marketplace for nearly six years to treat her Type I diabetes.7
Or William, whose daughter was able to access treatment for a rare disorder thanks to the ACA.8
These are people whom members of Congress should be advocating for, but instead they are putting the lives of everyday Americans at risk. We have to keep up the pressure and defend access to lifesaving health care.
Republicans are hoping that adding ACA rollbacks into the big tax bill will go unnoticed by everyday people, who overwhelmingly support the ACA. We have to make it clear that we are watching and will fight back against attempts to slash our care.
Right now, the bill is with the Senate as part of the reconciliation process. We have to organize NOW to make sure the ACA cuts don't make it into the final package. Click here to sign the petition and then share with three friends. Thanks for all you do.
