Dear Pamela,
Florida's hurricane season officially started yesterday, June 1, and as you prepare to protect your home and family, we also encourage you to protect your voice at the ballot box.
There are dozens of local elections in Florida this year, and several legislative special elections, including some scheduled to happen during hurricane season.
As we've seen in recent years, extreme weather events can damage polling places, displace voters, and cause confusion about elections. And yet, the support and information voters receive after a storm differs greatly across counties.
That's why Common Cause Florida is supporting legislation that would ensure all disaster-affected Florida voters have immediate access to certain support, as long as FEMA designates their county as eligible for disaster assistance or the Governor declares a state of emergency covering that county. The goal is simple: to make sure that eligible voters in all counties affected by a disaster have the same opportunities to vote.
Unfortunately, lawmakers failed to pass this legislation in 2025. We'll keep fighting for this legislation to become law, and until then, we'll help make sure Florida voters know their options and ways to safeguard their vote.
Here are some tips and resources to help you make your hurricane preparedness plan, including being prepared to cast your ballot in the aftermath of a storm:
Pamela, when hurricanes hit, democracy shouldn't be a casualty. Our elected leaders must act to ensure every Floridian can vote safely—even after a disaster.
Let's stay ready. Let's stay engaged. Let's demand a system that works for all voters in every season.
Thank you for standing up for our democracy,
Franceska Edouard, Florida Organizer
and the team at Common Cause Florida
