Pamela, Last month, the United States Department of Justice (DOJ) abruptly terminated roughly $820 million in grants that funded more than 200 organizations across 37 states to do life-saving work that makes communities safer. Today, alongside our partners from the Center for Children and Youth Justice, FORCE Detroit, Health Resources in Action, and Stop AAPI Hate, Vera is leading the challenge to these illegal and arbitrary funding terminations in a class action lawsuit, filed by Democracy Forward and Perry Law. As a result of the cuts, many nonprofits lost essential funding for community violence intervention, services for survivors of crime, and youth and criminal justice reform. Vera programs and services endangered by these funding cuts include: |
- making prisons across the country safer for both officers and people who are incarcerated;
|
- sending trained civilian specialists to a behavioral health crisis so that police are not the only option in these situations; and
|
- training police and law enforcement to better serve Deaf survivors of domestic violence.

Since President Trump took office, his administration has repeatedly attacked independent, mission-driven organizations that are a fundamental part of civil society by either terminating their funding or intimidating them with threats. We will not be deterred from our mission, but we need your support. Are you with us? Help Vera continue our work with a donation today. Onward, Nick — |
