Pamela,
We know that Florida's process to get citizen-led initiatives on the ballot is already one of the strictest in the nation. Now, extremist lawmakers are trying to make it even harder for everyday Floridians to participate in the initiative process.
Two senate bills (SB 7016 and 1414) are moving through the state legislature, introducing extreme barriers that would make it significantly harder for Floridians to bring constitutional amendments to the ballot. These bills would create new layers of government review, requiring additional criteria for the Attorney General to petition the state supreme court before signature petitions can even move forward. They would also reduce the number of days a sponsor would have to deliver signatures from 30 to 10, and increase penalties for even minor violations – creating an uphill battle for grassroots movements like ours.
The lawmakers pushing these bills claim they are about preventing fraud, but in practice, they are designed to make it harder for public participation and silence voters. These attacks limit our freedom to vote on the policies that govern our lives, consolidating power among special interests and the political establishment.
Florida has a long history of citizen-led ballot initiatives driving real change, and these bills would make it nearly impossible for everyday Floridians to have a voice in shaping our state's future. We must act now to protect our right to direct democracy.
Thank you,
