MoveOn full of "thugs and sleazebags"?!

In less than one week, Donald Trump will once again be president of the United States.

In less than one week, Donald Trump will once again be president of the United States.

And this time, for him, it's personal.

Trump campaigned on a platform of punishment and retribution against all who spoke against him, and Congress is poised to give him greater power than ever to take down his perceived "enemies"—including MoveOn.

From "nonprofit killer" legislation to threats against philanthropists who support progressive causes, we are entering a dangerous era for grassroots organizing.¹ As the American Civil Liberties Union put it, we are facing an attack on civil society itself.²

We must prevent Trump and his cronies from shutting down nonprofit organizations and build the power we will need to fight back against these attacks for the next four years. MoveOn is poised to help lead the charge, but we can do it only with your support. Will you donate $9?

Trump has made no secret of how he feels about groups who work to stop his authoritarian plans.

He has called us "thugs and sleazebags."³ He's accused us of trying "to destroy America and to destroy the American dream" and has promised to "root" us out.⁴

And his allies are giving him the weapons he needs to attack nonprofits, including MoveOn, who dare to challenge his regime.

The House has passed H.R. 9495, a bill that would grant Trump's Treasury Department unilateral power to label nonprofits as "terrorist-supporting organizations" and revoke their tax-exempt status.⁵ The Senate could take a vote on this "nonprofit killer" bill at any time.

Elon Musk's so-called "Department of Government Efficiency" is taking aim squarely at nonprofit media and public-access television, including NPR, threatening to defund critical resources in getting facts to the public.⁶

And thanks to Trump, the two largest social media platforms on Earth, X/Twitter and Facebook, have abandoned fact-checking, giving free rein to disinformation that undermines our causes.⁷

We need to show up in full force against this attack on civil society before it's too late. Will you pitch in $9 to MoveOn today?

We who believe in the promise of democracy and justice must be prepared to defend civil society against the authoritarian impulses of the Trump administration.

This may just be the toughest fight in MoveOn's history, as Trump threatens to discredit us, cut off our resources, and instill fear in our community.

That is why stopping H.R. 9495 is just our first step. We will help MoveOn members continue to flood the Senate with phone calls to make it very clear that Americans will not allow this attack on our First Amendment rights. We will run ads and organize as part of the 150+ member coalition working to stop this bill.

But we must also be prepared to fight back against the incoming onslaught of attacks we'll endure for fighting against Trump, including legal challenges that may arise.

With just days until Trump takes office, there is no time to waste. We must be ready.
