Pamela, there are dozens of pundits dissecting the election results – pushing their opinion on what happened, who ran the better campaign, and countless other arguments.
But in all this noise, one fact stood out: out of 300 events held by both campaigns, more than half were in just three states: Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Wisconsin. [1]
Why? These three states – along with Arizona, Georgia, Nevada, and North Carolina – are considered the battleground states essential to securing an Electoral College win.
That means voters in the other 43 states – the overwhelming majority of Americans – didn't hear directly from the candidates because the states where they live weren't considered competitive enough.
I'll be candid here: this is not the model a democracy for the people should be using. Giving some Americans' voices more weight than others is objectively wrong.
So, what's the solution? The National Popular Vote Interstate Compact: an agreement between states to award their electoral votes to the candidate that wins the most votes in a presidential election.
With the National Popular Vote (NPV), the candidate who wins the most votes nationwide would become the next president. This would finally give voters in ALL 50 states and D.C. a real, equal voice in presidential elections. It's common sense, Pamela!
Best of all, it wouldn't take an act of Congress or a constitutional amendment to get it done. By signing onto the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact, states can pledge to award their electoral votes to the national popular vote winner – simple as that.
And while it may seem far-fetched, we're closer to putting this in place than you might realize. 17 states and the District of Columbia have already signed on, giving us 209 of the 270 electoral votes we need to implement NPV.
That's why Common Cause has prioritized advancing the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact in as many states as possible this year – and we've recently helped bring Minnesota and Maine on board. With your action today, we can create the fair, representative democracy we deserve.
Pamela, the broken Electoral College has wreaked havoc on our democracy for long enough. If you agree with us and a majority of Americans, can you chip in $3 to help us create the fair, representative democracy we deserve?
