Pamela,
This April, we shared a major update in the fight to end housing discrimination for people with conviction histories. We are heartened and humbled by this community's generous response. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) is considering new regulations that would prevent people from being automatically denied HUD-subsidized housing based only on their conviction histories. More than 2,200 Vera supporters have submitted public comments to HUD in support of these changes so that more people leaving incarceration have the chance to find a home. |
One in three adults in the United States has a history of criminal legal system involvement. Preventing them from securing housing doesn't benefit our communities. Rather, ensuring housing access for all people is vital to our communities' well-being. This rule change is what real progress looks like. And we have a chance to make it a reality thanks to the tireless advocacy and support of people like you. Together, we can continue working toward a future where everyone has a safe place to call home. Onward, John |
