Sens. Cardin and Van Hollen can't give up now on Build Back Better

It's a new year—and Democrats in the Senate need to know we are expecting them to  fulfill their promise and pass the full Build Back Better Act.

A record number of voters turned out in 2020 to elect Democrats on the promise they'd deliver on the relief that all communities need during this ongoing pandemic. President Biden reiterated that promise in December when Senator Joe Manchin single-handedly delayed passage of the Build Back Better Act—Biden pledged that he'd come back in 2022 ready to deliver on climate, child care, and health care in impactful ways. 

It's a new year—and Democrats in the Senate need to know we are expecting them to fulfill their promise and pass the full Build Back Better Act. Add your name to this letter to Senators Ben Cardin and Chris Van Hollen if you agree.

We'll generate and send thousands of letters to Democratic senators—49 of whom were ready to vote for the Build Back Better Act a month ago—and deliver them to Senate offices to show our elected officials that this fight isn't over and we want them to use their power to get Build Back Better done ASAP.

While the headlines continue to center around Sen. Manchin, as his opposition delayed the vote scheduled for December, we must remember that all Democrats have power in the Senate, especially when they work together. Sen. Manchin is still at the negotiating table, because he's feeling pressure from constituents and fellow senators to provide the relief people need as COVID-19 cases surge, schools and child care facilities close, and millions remain out of work. The expanded Child Tax Credit, which has lifted millions of children out of poverty, has already expired—all the more reason we need to act now.

Will you sign this letter to your Sens. Cardin and Van Hollen to demand they do everything in their power to pass the Build Back Better Act—including demand a full vote—ASAP? Senators need to hear directly from their constituents on why action is needed urgently, so they can keep the pressure on Sen. Manchin. 

The Build Back Better Act contains essential support for our communities, including expanding Medicare to cover hearing needs and programs to combat the climate crisis. Every delay continues to leave millions of people across the country without critical support during troubling times.

These policies are wildly popular across the United States. Senate Democrats need to know they have the support of their constituents and the entire country as we ask them to pull out all the stops to overcome Sen. Manchin's obstruction and pass the Build Back Better Act. They are still under immense pressure from giant corporations and wealthy donors to scale back plans that value people over profits. We need to keep momentum up to ensure negotiations continue. Sen. Manchin needs to feel that he can't stop working toward passing Build Back Better because of the backlash he'd face from his Senate colleagues on top of pressure from his own constituents in West Virginia. This is what they were elected to do. They can't expect the same support in 2022 if they don't deliver.

We've overcome the odds before. The Affordable Care Act took a year to pass, and then over a year to defend. MoveOn members called until the phones rang off the hook and rallied at the Capitol until 3 a.m. the night the Senate finally voted down the ACA repeal.
