Children across the United States spent the last few months enjoying the holiday spirit. But for many families living in poverty, the holiday season entails an all too familiar set of Impossible Choices. Laundry or lunch? Gas or groceries? Books or bread?
For the 12 million children living in poverty, opportunities for playtime and early learning activities like reading, arts and crafts, singing and dress-up are not necessarily abundant. These kids and so many others across the globe are facing hardship after hardship, whether living through poverty or fighting hunger.
Darla* and her mother Daisy* live in rural Washington, and their journey with Save the Children can be traced back to even before Darla’s birth. Daisy has long been involved in our special-needs child advocacy work and, after Darla’s birth, is now participating in the Early Steps to School Success program. Through the Early Steps home visit program, parents like Daisy have the resources and tools they need to successfully support their children’s growth.
Parents are a child’s first teacher, and your support can help ensure that they’re well equipped to educate and set their children up for success.
