Pamela, Donald Trump has decided on his slogan for the 2026 midterms: if you can't win on merits, win by silencing voters.
And while some of his more blatant power grabs – like forcing new voting maps and criminalizing his political opponents – are grabbing the headlines, there's one less flashy tool in his kit that might do more to silence voters next year than both of those combined.
Let's break it down: earlier this year, the Trump Administration had reached out to all 50 states demanding full copies of their voter files.
Why did they want all that info – including driver's license and even partial Social Security Numbers? So they can build a massive, unsecured data system of our personal information.
It's a surveillance dragnet straight out of the DOGE playbook: pool all our data in one place and potentially weaponize it against us in the future.
And to make matters worse, the Trump Administration is pooling Social Security data which is not updated to reflect changes in citizenship status, and they are using it to flag voters – claiming that they are non-citizens and therefore voting fraudulently. (Individuals who have become naturalized citizens have no systematic way to contact the SSA and tell them they have become naturalized.)
Let's be clear about what's happening here: Trump and MAGA are not following the laws Congress set out to guarantee our right to privacy.
It's simply un-American – and just plain wrong. So – with your help, we're fighting back:
Common Cause is taking legal action to push back – suing to stop the handover of voter data [3] and intervening in federal cases. [4]
And we're marshaling a tidal wave of public pressure from activists like you to speak out before the federal government weaponizes our personal data against us in violation of the Privacy Act. Together we also generated 54,136 comments filed within the past two months with the Social Security Administration and the Department of Homeland Security to object to the pooling of our data.
Pamela, Common Cause is blowing the whistle – and stopping Trump from building this juggernaut that could cost us all our right to privacy.
But we can't do that without you. If you're as concerned as I am about Trump's massive invasion of voter privacy – and ready to take action to stop it – can you rush a contribution of $5 or more today?
If you've saved your info with ActBlue, we'll process your contribution instantly:
Thanks for all you do,
The team at Common Cause
