CBS News: Trump sounds off on Venezuela's Maduro as deadly boat strikes continue

We, the people, don't want another war!

Win Without War

Pamela: While Trump denies reports that the Pentagon is preparing to strike Venezuela, his actions tell a different, disturbing story.

More than a dozen U.S. airstrikes in waters near Venezuela have already killed at least 64 people.[1] Trump recently ordered the Navy's "most lethal" warship to the Caribbean, and he even confirmed that he's authorized covert CIA action in Venezuela.

Actions speak louder than words, and Trump's warmongering is speaking volumes. The Constitution gives Congress, not the president, the power to decide if and when the United States goes to war. And as Trump pushes us closer to the brink, lawmakers MUST reassert their constitutional authority to keep us from entering a new endless war.

Anti-war champions like Senators Tim Kaine and Adam Schiff are racing to introduce multiple pieces of legislation to avoid a war that puts millions of people at unnecessary risk — including a bipartisan War Powers Resolution that the Senate is expected to vote on in a matter of days. Now, it's up to us to make sure every elected official feels enough heat from their constituents to pull us back from the brink of war.

We, the people, don't want another war. Tell Congress: Pass a War Powers Resolution to Prevent War with Venezuela!

ACT NOW

Trump might be tempering expectations of a land invasion in the media, but that doesn't change the fact that his months-long illegal bombing campaign off the Venezuelan coast has brought us to the precipice of a new, wholly unnecessary war.

Let's be clear: Bombs in Latin America won't solve the overdose crisis here at home. Expanding the failed "war on drugs" won't stop the flow of fentanyl, prevent lives lost to overdoses, or make our communities any safer. What another endless war will do is put millions of lives in peril — from the people of Venezuela to U.S. servicemembers in the region.

Trump's war with Venezuela is as ineffective as it is illegal. Congress has not just the ability to take action, but a constitutional responsibility. Fortunately, a War Powers Resolution (WPR) can knock him off course.

Here's the legislative state of play: Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) and Rep. Jason Crow (D-CO) have each introduced a WPR in the House. On the other side of the chamber, Senators Kaine (D-VA), Schiff (D-CA), and Paul (R-KY) introduced a WPR that could be voted on as soon as this week.

What's happening in the Senate is particularly interesting — since 48 senators voted in favor of the last WPR, we only need three more senators to deliver a major bipartisan rebuke of Trump's warmongering. Your advocacy can make the difference. Together, let's build a majority of lawmakers willing to leverage their constitutional war powers and say NO to war with Venezuela!

Will you send a message to your elected officials today demanding they avoid war with Venezuela?

Win Without War has been here before, and won. With the help of tens of thousands of activists like you, we've stopped wars, and we'll do it this time too — but we need you with us again.

Our vision for a world where people live and thrive free from violence is still possible when people like us — people like you, Pamela — do all we can, in ways big and small, to make it happen.

Thank you for working for peace,
The Win Without War team
