BREAKING: Trump Calls Off Diplomatic Outreach to Venezuela
Pamela: Late yesterday, news broke that Trump has called off diplomatic efforts with Maduro's government in Venezuela, threatening to ramp up a month of unauthorized strikes in the Caribbean into an all-out war.[1]
It's a deeply troubling development that comes on the heels of reports that the Department of Justice has green-lit the Administration's designs for an "open-ended war against a secret list of groups, giving the president power to designate drug traffickers as enemy combatants and have them summarily killed without legal review."[2]
The Senate could vote as soon as THIS WEEK on a War Powers Resolution (WPR) that would block Trump from further warmongering in the Caribbean.
This is an all-hands-on-deck moment to avoid a new, sweeping conflict. Win Without War is racing to rally support for the WPR on Capitol Hill, leveraging every relationship and resource we have before the imminent vote. But do you know what's most likely to convince a senator, Pamela? Their constituents' voices.
| ACT NOW |
At least FOUR unauthorized, unjustified strikes in the Caribbean over the past month have reportedly killed 21 people. All with no firm answers as to who was on these boats or where they were headed, and with no end in sight.
No matter how Trump tries to spin it, bombs and bullets won't stop the flow of fentanyl here at home — especially not while he oversees massive cuts to the health and harm reduction programs that actually reduce deaths from overdose.
We know how this ends: Economic crises, the further erosion of civil liberties, escalated violence, and unnecessary suffering across the Western Hemisphere. That's what our sister organization, the Win Without War Education Fund, discovered after conducting a tabletop exercise (TTX) earlier this year that simulated the consequences of a similar scenario in Mexico.[3]
It's easy to feel powerless in the face of another potential endless war and the Trump administration's continued push toward authoritarianism. But, we have an opportunity — a responsibility — to act before it can even begin. That looks like flooding Senate offices with letters from constituents demanding that Congress use its constitutional war powers to pass Senators Schiff and Kaine's WPR and stop Trump's dangerous escalations in the Caribbean.
This vote is going to be close. That's why we need you, along with tens of thousands of others like you who reject more of the same, failed violence-first solutions, to help push the Senate to reassert that it's Congress, NOT the president, that decides if and when we go to war. Join us:
Trump's strikes in the Caribbean are part of a violent, authoritarian overreach that's manifesting both abroad and here at home.
That's why we're rallying support for this crucial WPR.
That's why we're resisting the weaponization of the National Guard against the people they're sworn to protect in cities across the country.
And that's why we're joining movement partners and activists on October 18 to demonstrate once again that we have "NO KINGS" in the U.S.
Folks like us refuse to give in to Trump's relentless march toward authoritarianism. So whether by signing petitions, making donations, or preparing to join the nonviolent mobilizations happening across the country next Saturday, you are refusing to give in to complacency or despair too, Pamela.
Thank you for working for peace,
