Costco tends to be on the right side of history. From championing workers' rights to its iconic $1.50 hot dog, Costco is reliably the good guy in a world full of soulless large corporations.
However this time, Costco isn't on the right side of history. It decided to cave to pressure from anti-abortion extremists and not dispense Mifepristone, the safe FDA-approved abortion pill that has been used for over 20 years, at any of its pharmacy locations. That means that now, 500+ of its pharmacies won't be carrying this safe – and necessary – medication.
Corporations shouldn't dictate whether women can access safe, legal medication. Plus, this sets a horrible precedent of Costco caving to pressure from outside groups. Tell Costco's leadership to resume carrying Mifepristone nationwide.
Religious groups, like the Alliance Defending Freedom and Inspire Investing, are waging a nationwide campaign to block access to lifesaving abortion medication. We already have our government telling us what to do with our bodies, but now corporations have a hand in it, too.
If ADF and Inspire Investing get their way, they'll continue to wage this war against women with the help of corporations that every day Americans rely on. By bowing to these extremist groups, Costco is undermining reproductive healthcare and caving to a vocal minority of extremists who want to eliminate reproductive access and abortion entirely.
Other pharmacies, like Walgreens and CVS, are standing up for reproductive care. Now Costco must do the right thing and restart carrying Mifepristone nationwide now. Send a message to Costco's Board of Directors and CEO Ron Vachris demanding Costco not cave to extremists and carry this critical medication nationwide.
In solidarity,
Mike Phelan
