Pamela – millions of Americans are at risk of losing the health care coverage they rely on when the enhanced Affordable Care Act (ACA) premium tax credits expire on January 1, 2026.
With these tax credits expiring, along with Medicaid cuts, Americans are not only going to lose their health insurance, but they'll also have to pay more for existing coverage. Trump and his Republican friends campaigned on – and promised – lower health care costs. But because Republicans refused to extend these premium tax subsidies, we won't be seeing lower health care costs any time soon.
People will get sick and die without adequate health insurance, and that will be because Republicans only care about providing tax handouts to their ultra-wealthy friends. This should be Congress's main priority when they return from August recess, so tell your congressperson to extend the ACA Premium Tax Credits to save countless lives.
If these tax subsidies aren't extended, healthier people will opt out of their insurance because of the higher cost, while sicker people will stay on, increasing costs for insurers. And that will lead to higher premiums from insurance companies. Already, we're seeing premium increases of about 20% for 2026.
The Big Brutal Bill slashed over $1 trillion from Medicaid and the ACA while extending four times that amount in tax cuts for the ultra-wealthy and big corporations. People will die due to lack of affordable insurance.
But it's not too late; there's still time to reverse course and protect these critical tax subsidies. Tell your representatives to extend the ACA Premium Tax Credits once they're back in session.
In solidarity,
Mike Phelan
