Pamela,
I want to talk to you about something outrageous that's happening—and why we need to speak up right now.
Donald Trump's political team is pressuring Republican leaders across the country to redraw our congressional maps, years ahead of schedule. The goal? Rigging election maps in his party's favor before the 2026 midterm elections—no matter how many voters they silence to do it. We see this for what it is: another strategy to consolidate political power.
Let's be clear: Under the Florida Constitution, it is illegal to draw maps with the intent to favor a political party. We the people of Florida made that illegal in 2010 with a 63% vote that passed the Fair Districts Amendments.
In an unprecedented move back in 2022, Governor DeSantis drew Florida's congressional map to get the districts - and the outcome - he wanted. Our current maps are already gerrymandered and have been challenged in state and federal court for silencing Black and Latino voters.
Congressional maps are redrawn every 10 years, following the U.S. Census. But now, just like we are seeing in other states, Governor DeSantis and other state leaders are discussing mid-cycle redistricting, proposing to change the maps again before the midterm election next year. That's not just unfair, it's cheating right in our faces.
This should not be happening at all. We need to tell our representatives in the Florida Legislature loud and clear: Don't cheat. Don't break the law. Don't redraw the maps in the middle of the decade.
Changing the rules mid-game is not about fairness. It is about control, it ignores the will of the people – and it will cost Florida taxpayers millions of dollars at a time when they need real solutions for the ongoing affordability crisis impacting workers and seniors across our state. When maps are manipulated, communities lose representation, voters' voices are silenced, and trust in democracy erodes.
You can help stop this. Legislators are holding meetings in your community right now. This is the time for representatives to hear directly from voters in their districts, and it's an opportunity to demand that they reject any efforts at mid-cycle redistricting.
Tell your county legislative delegation to oppose any mid-cycle redistricting. Call your representatives at their district offices. And if you can, sign up to attend and speak at your county's Legislative Delegation Meeting.
Every voter deserves to know that their voice matters, their community counts, and their district lines are drawn fairly. Floridians passed the Fair Districts amendments because we believe in fairness, accountability, and a democracy that puts people first.
Voters should always choose their representatives, not the other way around.
Thank you for being a voice for democracy,
Amy Keith, Executive Director
and the team at Common Cause Florida
