Pamela: Trump broke his campaign promises and made a bet that war would be a political win. But with every act of protest, petition signature, and call to Congress, we showed him how wrong he was.
In the face of immediate, loud, and organized opposition to his deeply unpopular war — thanks in part to the vocal leadership of Senator Tim Kaine (D-VA) and Representative Ro Khanna (D-CA), who introduced war powers resolutions (WPRs) in Congress to pull us off the path toward war — Trump has, for now, decided to avoid further escalation.
We're grateful to Sen. Kaine and Rep. Khanna for their leadership, for standing up for the Constitution and the will of the people in the face of an erratic, war-mongering White House. This is the type of leadership we need to combat rising authoritarianism as Trump uses war to not only terrorize communities abroad, but deepen chaos at home.
We'll need more of it in the days, weeks, and months to come. That's why we want to send a message of gratitude to Sen. Kaine and Rep. Khanna — both to let them know they're not alone in advocating for peace, and to show other lawmakers that there is a mass movement of supporters around the country ready to have their backs, empowering them to do the same.
| ACT NOW |
After more than a week of devastating strikes, an Israel-Iran ceasefire is a positive and life-saving step. But with high risk of renewed violence, we can't afford to let Trump order or support further military action.
That's where Sen. Tim Kaine and Rep. Ro Khanna's WPRs in Congress come in.
Even before Trump's reckless, illegal strikes against Iranian nuclear sites, Sen. Kaine and Rep. Khanna introduced WPRs to reassert Congressional authority and pull us off the path of directly entering Netanyahu's war with Iran — WPRs that became even more urgent when Trump brought the U.S. to the brink of all-out war.
Rep. Khanna joined forces with Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) for their WPR in the House, which quickly amassed dozens of cosponsors. Sen. Kaine got a vote for his WPR in the Senate, garnering bipartisan support on the floor and forcing every senator to go on record saying whether or not they support Trump unilaterally dragging us into another endless war in the Middle East.
This isn't the end of the fight, and it's critical we send our champions in Congress a clear reminder that we see their work to demand diplomacy over military force — and need even more of it in this fragile moment.
Thank you for working for peace,
The Win Without War team
