Dear Pamela,
Despite California's progressive reputation, it is one of the epicenters of mass incarceration in the United States. That's why, since 2018, Vera California has worked to build community-based solutions that deliver safety, stability, and justice.
With so many Californians cycling in and out of the criminal justice system because of poverty or unmet treatment needs, we're focused on expanding the tools judges have to offer effective solutions—like job skills training or outpatient behavioral healthcare.
That's why Vera California is co-sponsoring the Safer Communities through Opportunities Act (Assembly Bill 1231) in the California state legislature. This bill would empower judges to choose rehabilitation instead of incarceration for low-level felonies. |
Robust research has found that any length of time in jail is so destabilizing that it makes someone more likely to be arrested again in the future. That's why we support proven community-based programs that prevent crime, get people housed, and give people a chance to support themselves.
Every day, we're advocating for a California that works for all of us. Thank you for your continued support for essential work like this.
Onward, Vera Institute of Justice |
Vera California is one of Vera's three place-based initiatives, along with Greater Justice New York and Vera Louisiana. We leverage our relationships with local government and community partners to dismantle harmful, punitive systems and instead build institutions that deliver safety and justice. |
