Dear MoveOn member,
As one of MoveOn's dedicated donors, we wanted to take this opportunity to share with you some highlights of MoveOn's work over the past month—and what a month it has been!
As we approached Donald Trump's 100th day in office in April, MoveOn showed that the grassroots movement opposed to the cruel and destructive policies of his administration is growing stronger by the day. Trump's poll numbers are falling, with his 100-day approval rating lower than that of any other president in the last 70 years, and voices of dissent are growing louder and louder.1
Here are some highlights of the work we did to build and amplify that dissent in April:
TAKING TO THE STREETS TO SAY: "HANDS OFF!"
MoveOn kicked off April by working with our allies to support over 1,300 Hands Off! protests on April 5, in the largest single day of action since Donald Trump started his second term and one of the largest ever in U.S. history.
More than 3 million people took to the streets in big cities, small towns, urban centers, and rural counties to show our unified opposition to Trump and Elon Musk's attempts to rip away vital programs like Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security from everyday Americans in order to funnel even more money to billionaires and corporations.2
These peaceful events were a wake-up call to congressional Republicans, letting them know that the grassroots movement opposed to their cruel and hateful policies is awake, organized, and growing by the day.
April 5 was the first big step in showing the breadth of opposition to Trump's power grab and to building a bigger movement—and MoveOn is doing everything we can to continue to train volunteers, organize events, and flex our digital muscles to keep this momentum going for as long as it takes.
DEMANDING ANSWERS FROM ELECTED OFFICIALS
Building on the energy from April 5, MoveOn members took the pressure directly to their elected officials, holding events in front of congressional district offices during Congress' April recess.
A central focus of these events was to demand that Congress take action to #BringKilmarHome, referring to Kilmar Abrego Garcia, the Maryland father whom the Trump administration mistakenly deported to a prison in El Salvador notorious for torture and other human rights abuses. 40,000 MoveOn members have already signed a petition demanding that Kilmar be returned to the U.S., just as the Supreme Court has demanded.
And we know we're breaking through. Congressional Republicans are running scared and have even stopped holding town halls because of the overwhelming disapproval coming from their constituents. And when polling was released on Trump's 100th day in office, his approval rating was lower than that of any other president in the last 70 years. He is now underwater on both his handling of the economy and immigration, the two issues that helped him win reelection in the first place.3
Pressure is growing by the minute from the public and the courts for Trump to stop his illegal deportations, and MoveOn is continuing to stand side by side with our allies to amplify the call.
BUILDING COMMUNITY RESILIENCE FOR THE FIGHT AHEAD
As part of MoveOn's commitment to expanding our movement and building people power, we have launched the Action Community Training (ACT) program to train and provide resources to anyone who is interested in organizing in their own community. We host weekly Volunteer Network Calls to bring members together, build community, share learnings, and listen to inspiring speakers who are helping to lead this fight.
Earlier this month, we were joined on one of our calls by Maryland Senator Chris Van Hollen, just days after he returned from his trip to El Salvador to visit Kilmar Abrego Garcia. Sen. Van Hollen was able to share updates on the work to bring Kilmar home, and how important the ongoing efforts of MoveOn members to raise awareness and demand action are in the fight to stop Trump's illegal and inhumane immigration policy.
We closed out the month with a very special virtual conversation with Governor Tim Walz and Senator Cory Booker about what we've done to defy and slow down Trump's agenda during his first 100 days—and what we can do in the next 100 days to continue to build this momentum.
On the call, Gov. Walz was asked what inspired him to hold his own town halls in red states and districts, and he said this: "First and foremost, I heard the primal scream of MoveOn members that said, 'Do something, damn it! Stand up for our rights, stand up for what's going on.'"
Sen. Booker reminded us that the fight to protect our communities, stop Trump's attempts to push our nation into authoritarianism, and rebuild our democracy will not be won overnight. It will be small victories that build, one on top of the other on top of the other, into a movement that is undeniable.
He said, "Real power is people standing up for others, and that's what [MoveOn] is about. Not waiting for the president or for senators or governors ... [because] when people in power are doing wrong, the people rise up."
MoveOn has been doing this work for nearly 27 years, and we will continue to lead the way and help MoveOn members and our allies rise up to put a stop to authoritarianism and build a better, brighter future where everyone can thrive.
This work would not be possible without the dedicated support of MoveOn's donors, Andra, and we are so grateful to have you with us.
Thank you.
As we head into the next 100 days of Trump's regime, it is more important than ever that we continue to build on this momentum and stop Trump's agenda at every turn.
