Pamela,
Natural disasters are more frequent than ever. Thanks to the climate crisis and our country's aging infrastructure, these disasters are more devastating than ever. And in our time of need, we lean on the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) when disaster strikes.
Trump wants to completely dismantle FEMA altogether, saying that states should shoulder most of the burden for disaster response. It was right there in Project 2025, saying states should be forced to cover 75% of disaster costs while slashing federal aid.
Time and time again, we've seen Republicans cut taxes for the rich while everyone else has to fend for themselves. And the dismantling of FEMA is just another step in the wrong direction. It's important to demand Congress to protect FEMA ahead of the upcoming disaster season.
For decades, FEMA has been there for Americans in their time of need. From hurricanes in the Gulf Coast, wildfires in the West, or tornadoes in the Midwest, FEMA is the safety net that helps communities recover when states are overwhelmed.
Republicans think that a patchwork of state and privately funded support will do FEMA's job. They're wrong. FEMA provides coordination, expertise, and funding that states simply cannot replace. Without it, disaster response would become fragmented, chaotic, and dangerously underfunded. Survivors would face longer recovery times, fewer resources, and greater suffering. Private, for-profit companies can't take FEMA's place.
People who've lost everything – their house, car, their way of life – to a natural disaster can't rely on the for-profit private sector for support. And Republicans want to shut it down just to add a few more dollars to the pockets of billionaires.
Congress needs to take a stand against Trump's attacks on FEMA. Tell them: Protect FEMA against the Project 2025 agenda.
Thank you,
Mike Phelan
