Hi Pamela,
As one of their last environmental acts in office, earlier this year, the Biden administration released crucial environmental, economic, and public health analysis about the impacts of liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports confirming what we've long known: LNG exports are NOT in the public interest — not for our economy, not for our environment, and certainly not for our health.
The 60-day public comment period opened by the Department of Energy to hear from the public has given people like you the opportunity to make your voice heard. Despite President Trump's attempts to reverse the climate progress achieved over the last two decades, this comment period is a prime opportunity to anchor LNG evaluations and rulemaking in strong scientific analysis to benefit public health and the environment. Administrations come and go, so having a strong scientific basis for administrative rulemaking regarding LNG is key to protecting people and ecosystems from fossil fuel expansion for years to come.
Supporters of Greenpeace USA have submitted over 20,000 public comments, but the work is not done yet! Now, as the public comment period draws to a close on March 20th, we need your help to solidify the message being heralded by all those who care about climate and environmental justice: LNG exports drive up energy costs, endanger vulnerable communities, and put our national security at risk. The Department of Energy must act on this analysis and reject all pending LNG export permits.
Only 1 day left to submit your comment: Tell the Department of Energy to act by rejecting all new LNG export permits to protect our future!
Here's why your voice is urgently needed:
-
Climate devastation: Projects like CP2 LNG in Louisiana could emit 190 million tons of CO2e per year — equivalent to the pollution from 51 coal-fired power plants. We can't let these carbon bombs move forward.
-
Health impacts in vulnerable communities: LNG facilities are concentrated in areas already suffering from pollution and climate change. This leads to higher rates of cancer, asthma, and heart disease for people who've suffered enough.
-
Environmental destruction: Heavy dredging and construction for LNG facilities damage ecosystems, devastate local economies reliant on fishing and tourism, and threaten biodiversity.
-
Higher costs for families: LNG exports raise energy bills for Americans while padding the profits of oil and gas CEOs. We need policies that protect people, not corporate profits.
Hundreds of thousands of Americans — including consumer advocates, national security experts, frontline community leaders, and healthcare professionals — have already spoken out, and they were a critical piece of winning the initial pause on LNG export approvals. Now, it's up to us to ensure the final analysis is utilized and empowers the Department of Energy to take decisive action to stop LNG exports.
Over 20,000 Greenpeace USA supporters have already submitted their comments. Can you help us reach our goal of 30,000 comments submitted by March 20th? Make your voice heard: Submit your comment today and demand that the DOE stand up to Big Oil and Gas.
In solidarity,
-The Team at Greenpeace USA
