California needs wildfire aid now – with no partisan, anti-voter demands attached.

Pamela, President Trump is once again exploiting a crisis: using the suffering of those affected by the Los Angeles fires as a tool to push his voter suppression agenda. That's right – he's threatening to withhold aid to the thousands of Southern Californians who've lost their homes, livelihoods, and communities to wildfire unless the state government sides with him to deny thousands of voters' rights by passing a voter ID law.   And unfortunately, his friends in Congress are falling in line, with House Speaker Mike Johnson refusing to commit to helping his fellow Americans in need if there isn't something in it for his party. He's still spreading lies – lies he might even believe himself – about the 2020 election that he lost. But using a disaster to settle those old scores is absolutely disgusting. Entire neighborhoods have been reduced to ash, families have been displaced, and critical infrastructure has been damaged. The road to recovery is long – and Trump & Johnson's partisan power grabs will only make it longer. California lawmakers have already passed strong protections for the state's voting systems to ensure they're both accessible AND secure. Adding voter ID into the mix would do nothing to secure elections, just shut thousands of eligible voters out on the basis of class and color.
