Fund the government. Protect our planet.

Dear MoveOn member,

Right now, fossil fuel lobbyists are pushing hard to sneak harmful climate provisions into a must-pass bill to fund the government. Lumping these dirty policies into this critical vote would force members of Congress to choose between voting to fund the government or voting against a bill that takes us a step backward on climate action. Democrats just passed the most significant bill to address climate change in history, the Inflation Reduction Act.1 What our country needs right now is to keep charging forward on saving our planet—not letting lobbyists turn us back.

Will you make your voice heard and email Sen. Van Hollen today? Click here to ask him to support a clean continuing resolution to fund the government and protect important climate progress. Tell him to oppose any provisions that would expand the use of fossil fuels.

The proposed dirty-energy provisions would set us back by gutting regulations that make people and our environment safer. The impact of this legislation would threaten tribal authority, endanger public health, fast-track fossil fuel infrastructure projects, cut public input on local fossil fuel development, and revive the dangerous Mountain Valley Pipeline.2 We need progressive senators to support a clean government spending bill that excludes all of the above. Corporate interests can no longer take priority over our communities' needs, health, and agency.

A new report from the United Nations just proclaimed that we are headed toward "unchartered territories of destruction."3 It's more clear than ever that we are in a growing climate crisis. Wildfire season has begun, and we are already seeing multiple blazes across the state of Oregon, posing great threats to air quality and thousands of homes.4 Historic rainfall and flooding exacerbated an existing water crisis in Jackson, Mississippi, leaving 150,000 residents without clean drinking water.5 Simultaneously, significant droughts are impacting large swaths of the country from the Northeast to the Southwest.6 And this is just domestically.

Email and urge Senator Van Hollen to do the right thing: fund the government without any provisions that would further harm our communities and planet. Tell him that Congress needs to make it more difficult for the fossil fuel industry to destroy the planet, not easier.

President Biden and congressional Democrats are on a roll. The Inflation Reduction Act they passed last month without support from a single Republican is landmark legislation that is spurring massive climate action, cutting energy and health care costs for families, and making huge corporations pay more of their fair share. But this dirty-energy deal is threatening to derail the momentum they've built less than 60 days before the midterm election. Climate action is wildly popular with voters, especially Democrats.

Thanks for joining us in calling for progressives in Congress to do the right thing and continue fighting anything that would accelerate climate change. We've made progress but know we have a long way to go toward protecting our communities and planet from the devastating impacts of climate change.

Thanks for all you do.

Want to support MoveOn's work? Donald Trump's preparations for being able to steal the presidency in 2024 are well underway and include working to replace top election officials in battleground states with his own loyalists. Which is why MoveOn is doing something we've never done in our 23-year history: We're launching a powerful, multimillion-dollar effort to defeat Trump-backed secretaries of state across the country and elect individuals who will count every vote and ensure fair elections.
