Dear MoveOn member,
Bombshell revelations in Bob Woodward's latest book reveal that, in the days leading up to the January 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol, a prominent Republican lawyer wrote up a six-point plan for how Mike Pence could block certification of Joe Biden's election victory and keep Donald Trump in power.1
It's a blueprint for a coup d'état, authored by a respected member of the Republican legal establishment.
Thankfully, the plan did not succeed—this time—but it was discussed seriously at the highest levels of the White House. But the damage to our democracy and the loss of life at the U.S. Capitol were the tragic outcome of Republicans' refusal to accept election results, and this could happen again, because we know that Trump is laying the groundwork to run for president in 2024.
This is a battle for the very survival of American democracy, and to win this battle, we must prevent Republicans from winning control of Congress in the 2022 midterm elections.
That's why, between now and the end of this year, MoveOn is running a series of cutting-edge experiments to develop the messaging and strategies we'll need to get out the vote and persuade undecided voters. However, donations to MoveOn have fallen sharply in 2021, and if we don't catch up fast, we'll be at a huge disadvantage. Will you chip in monthly to sustain our work for the long haul?

The plan outlined by Trump's lawyer John Eastman called for Pence to ignore Electoral College votes from seven states won by Biden that submitted "multiple slates of electors."2 The election would then go to the House of Representatives, where each state delegation would get one vote and Republicans hold a 26-24 advantage.
It might have seemed far-fetched before, but the current Republican Party, one that's clearly shaped by Trump, is a racist, authoritarian, and anti-democratic party, one that will do anything to regain power.
Meanwhile, Republican state legislatures are passing voter suppression laws targeting low-income voters and people of color. Republicans running for secretary of state offices—the officials who will oversee states' election process in 2024—in key battleground states of Arizona, Georgia, Wisconsin, Michigan, and Nevada are all backers of Trump's Big Lie.3
To ensure free and fair elections and save American democracy, we must stop Republicans from winning control of Congress in 2022—and then we must win in 2024 by a big-enough margin to prevent all attempts to overturn the results of the election.
Here's our plan: the MoveOn team is currently researching and developing the innovative strategies we need to overcome GOP voter suppression and get out the vote. We know we can do it because we've done it many times before.
For example, in 2020, we implemented a friend-to-friend voter turnout strategy that proved to be five times more effective than past strategies, like phone calls and going door to door. But every time we come up with a breakthrough strategy, the other side copies us, so we need to keep innovating to stay ahead.
Implementing our plan across enough districts to really make a difference won't be cheap, and since Trump left office, donations to MoveOn and other progressive groups have fallen sharply. That's why we're urgently asking you today to chip in whatever you can.
