| Pamela, Between refusing to vote for the For the People Act, and now demanding that the Hyde Amendment stay, Joe Manchin is throwing low income people and people of color under the bus.1 The Hyde Amendment is a discriminatory policy that bans government insurance like Medicaid and Military Tricare from covering abortion care—forcing 1 in 4 women to carry a pregnancy to term because they cannot afford an abortion. Nonprofits that help people fill in the gap, like the DC Abortion Fund, have seen a dramatic increase in request for support since the pandemic started: "We saw our call volume essentially double overnight. . . . Suddenly, it just became so much more untenable," DCAF President Dee Srivastava told The Washington Post. "We're literally not sure how much longer we can continue this."2 We're raising money for the DC Abortion Fund, a volunteer-run nonprofit group that helps callers afford abortion care. When you donate $5 today, 100% will go directly to help someone pay for their abortion. Costs for abortion care when it isn't covered by insurance vary wildly from $500 to thousands of dollars, forcing it out of reach for people who are struggling financially. No one should be denied access to abortion just because they're working to make ends meet. The harm of the Hyde Amendment falls hardest on people of color working to make ends meet. Because of racism, sexism, and economic inequality, people of color disproportionately comprise the majority of Medicaid enrollees. 30% of Black women and 24% of Hispanic women are enrolled in Medicaid, compared to 14% of white women.3 And the web of anti-abortion legislation often force people to travel to DC for abortion care. People not only need help paying for an abortion, but they also need help with travel expenses, time off work, and child care. The way things are going right now, DCAF would need to more than double its annual budget just to meet existing needs. Can you donate $5 to help DCAF support people across the country who need abortion care? Your donation would go directly to fund care. President Biden removed the Hyde Amendment from his presidential budget—a huge victory after decades of Black, Indigenous, and Latinx advocates calling on Democrats to get rid of the discriminatory policy. But Joe Manchin, who claims to be for the working people of America, thinks it should stay? If Joe Manchin really wants to help people struggling to make ends meet in this country, he shouldn't hesitate to get rid of the Hyde Amendment.
