Dear Pamela, Getting an apartment or home loan, how much you pay for auto insurance, whether you'll land that new job — all can be affected by your credit report. And a groundbreaking study from Consumer Reports has found that credit reports are often filled with damaging errors that can cost you dearly. Some 6,000 consumers reviewed their credit reports, and here's the bad news: -
34% found at least one error on their credit report -
29% found personal information errors, including incorrect addresses -
11% found account errors, including accounts they didn't even recognize -
10% said it was difficult or very difficult to access their report, with some being locked out of their reports altogether Credit reports can make or break your financial future, but the big credit reporting agencies are black boxes, with little transparency on how they create your credit reports and scores. We need transparency and reform now! Sign our petition to the big three credit reporting agencies — Equifax, Experian, Transunion. Demand that they fix errors quickly, and make credit reports/scores easily accessible and always free. Add Your Name Consumer Reports' people-powered research found that many people were being charged to access their credit reports in spite of a law providing for annual free reports. Some unwittingly signed up for paid services without realizing it. The bad news is that errors, difficulties in accessing reports, and extra costs are hurting consumers. The good news is we can do something about it. We're calling on Equifax, Experian and Transunion to change how they do business, and embrace transparency, to ensure everyone has a fair financial future: - Fix errors quickly so no one loses out on home loans, credit cards, or job opportunities.
- Make credit reports easier to access.
- Stop charging for credit reports and scores, and make them free always.
Will you sign our petition now to tell Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion to do the right thing? They rely on consumers like you for their livelihoods, so use your power now to get them to change how they do business. Add Your Name This is a vital consumer fairness issue, and it's time for these mysterious big three agencies to step up to the plate. After you sign our petition, make sure to forward this email far and wide to get others signed on. The only way the credit agencies will respond to our demands is if we get enough consumers speaking out. Thanks for all you do. Marcus Jones Consumer Reports |
