| It's Odessa Kelly here — have y'all seen this? The government said that the economy created just 266,000 jobs in April — a significant slowdown from our previously steady recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic. But instead of fighting for workers' rights and $15 minimum wage pay to help folks find jobs with fair wages, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce is recommending taking away the $300 weekly supplemental unemployment benefit. Black and Hispanic communities, women, and low-wage workers are faring worse right now. That's why in Congress I'll fight tooth and nail for a more equitable economy that ensures all people have the right to housing, education, child care, and healthcare — but I need your help to demonstrate just how important this issue really is. Will you join me in calling for a $15 an hour federal minimum wage? Together, we can use our collective power to show how urgent and necessary economic justice really is. In a press release, the Chamber stated, "Based on the Chamber's analysis, the $300 benefit results in approximately one in four recipients taking home more in unemployment than they earned working." Well Pamela, here's what I have to say about that: Trying to take away supplemental unemployment benefits as we're working to recover from a global pandemic is not only heartless, it's politically calculated. When we let corporations convince us that people are too lazy to work, they are able to divide us and distract us from the poverty wages they pay. Even before the pandemic, our economy was broken — but as we're building up from the losses of COVID-19, we have the opportunity to create an economy that works for everyone, not just those at the top. In Congress, I'll be a fearless advocate for progressive economic justice, but we've got to prove we have the support of the people behind us. The truth is, passing a $15 per hour federal minimum wage requires bold leadership and lots of support — anything less just won't cut it. Help me end poverty wages once and for all by adding your name today. Thank you, thank you, thank you for believing in this campaign. Let's make some big change happen! - Odessa |
